The “right to be forgotten” – a key element of the new GDPR regulation that has been dominating the news agenda for much of the past few months. As of Friday 25th May 2018, anyone should be safe in the knowledge that if they ask any organisation to have their personal data deleted, that organisation does so and if requested, can provide proof of such a deletion. This means even if you are standing in the queue to buy a Happy Meal from McDonald’s, you can ask to see the footage from the security camera records that have filmed you and request that they it is deleted from their systems.

Decentralization is the restructuring or reorganization of authority so that there is a system of co-responsibility (instead of a central point of responsibility or authority). In practical terms, decentralization boils down to sharing control of a process you care about. Decentralization can be very very powerful and even a little bit can go a long way.

Before talking about decentralization in blockchain terms, let’s consider an everyday non-technical example (a fender bender) to explore the influence of sharing control with others in a process, to illustrate one benefit of decentralization.

Over $50,000 is up for grabs at the Consensus Building Blocks hackathon in NYC this weekend. We will be there to judge, watch, mentor and support participant developers as they try to capture part of the prize using our new application development platform - Interbit. But, there is an even bigger prize…in total, 20 to 60 BILLION dollars is up for grabs! This is the amount of money that will be spent on blockchain applications and services in the coming years. We may not know exactly what the future looks like, but we do know that developers are going to be asked to build it. And, they will be paid handsomely to do it. Interbit has been developed in the popular coding language of JavaScript, making it easy to use and build upon. The platform provides a more secure environment for computing, ensures privacy of data, and via its unique “chain joining” capability, multiple blockchains can be used to build applications that are faster, scalable, and more resilient.

  • As 2018 dawns it is hard to see the mania of 2017 around cryptocurrencies dwindling. More and more businesses are looking to do an asset raise via the creation of a crypto and of course the “blue-chip” crypto, Bitcoin, remains firmly in many headlines. The debate as to whether we are in a bubble fit to burst or not will continue and that debate will only get more heated if Bitcoin makes another attempt at breaking $20,000. While everyone is focused on whether it is going to reach $20, $50, $100 thousand, they are missing the bigger story about the underlying technology: blockchain (or distributed ledger, call it what you will). At BTL we really don’t care about what Bitcoin does because it has no impact on what we’re doing. Since 2015 we’ve been building Interbit, a new blockchain platform and the journey to date has been both fascinating, as the technology evolves, but also enlightening for our clients and us.

  • Companies often talk about the disruptive potential of their technology, but often misunderstand what it means. Disruption is described by the English dictionary as disturbance or problems that interrupt an event, activity, or process. • The following is an opinion article by BTL CTO Hugh Halford-Thompson

Businesses across all industries can gain an unfair advantage over others by manipulating data. This type of fraud occurs under many forms - an employee who signed off on a bad trade and later put somebody else’s name to it, perhaps the amendment of a contract where one party regretted the terms they signed up to. Another common case involves athletes or their sponsors manipulating drug test data they are not content with.

  • The following is part 2 of a 3 part opinion series on the blockchain by Daniel Sutton.

Blockchain is going to change the way you transact. Drastically.

The Atlantic recently reported that to read all the user agreements that you encounter in your year would take 76 working days. That’s why we don’t read them, for better or worse. Extrapolate then, the time you spend filling in bank forms, applications, online memberships, rental agreements, insurance, tax, and the thousand other daily identity verification procedures you go through to essentially establish: a) that you are who you say you are; and b) that you can be trusted.

While often associated with the indelible ledger of Bitcoin transactions, broader appreciation for the implications of a trustless, two party transaction mechanism are inspiring a new generation of Blockchain companies to diversify their market scope. What TCP/IP is to the internet, Blockchains will be to transactions.
